Vitamin D- The Sunshine Vitamin

Kersenbrock Medical & Wellness: Sunshine Vitamin D

Our bodies are designed to make Vitamin D as we are exposed to the sun. It does not occur naturally in many fruits and vegetables, which is why many of our foods are listed as being Vitamin D fortified. Those at risk for vitamin D deficiencies include individuals lacking in sun exposure, those with limited dietary intake, and those patients unable to absorb the vitamin effectively in their gastrointestinal system.

The majority of patients with Vitamin D deficiencies are asymptomatic; however many present with symptoms of excessive fatigue, generalized muscle aches, depression, and irritability. Patients diagnosed with weak and brittle bones (osteopenia vs. osteoporosis) are almost always lacking in this essential vitamin.

Research is now supporting an association between Vitamin D deficiency and increased risk of cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, autoimmune disease, and mental health disorders.
